Two types of template
Templates are a great springboard for creating, whether an arty mixed media page or a travel photobook
Time out to heal, created with the “Hear My Voice: Hiding” Collection
In every “Hear My Voice” mixed media collection, Rachel (of Pixels, Paper and Paint) and I always include a pair of page templates.
Rachel designed the ones in the “HMV: Hiding” collection, and I absolutely love them. They come with interesting distressed photo frames/ borders plus lots of inky marks and other mixed media details.
They make a great basis for a page using any (or NO!) photos, especially if you add some transfers (such as the floral transfer above)
You can see in my page at the top I used the templates to create a page centred around a photo from when I took off to Europe. It’s one of those so-called ‘art therapy’ pages, where the photo holds a lot more meaning that may appear at first glance, and I lost myself in adding the journal prompts and imagery that spoke to me around those feelings.
You’ll see I chose to use just one photo, and to use the other framed spots for other imagery from the collection. And one of the great things about templates is that you can make them your own in any way you want.
Here’s a few other examples of how Rachel and some of our friends used the same templates:
PS if you are unfamiliar with how to use digital page templates, here’s a process video where I use another set of mine:
Much as I LOVE making messy mixed media pages, I also love making travel photobooks, and this is where another type of template comes into its own.
Photobook album sets are great because they streamline the process of making photobook pages that are still that little bit more creative and unique. Decide on your fonts and then it’s a breeze.
I used the “See This No.3” set to create a long overdue photobook of a trip to the USA many years ago. It was a digital design conference, but I dragged the whole family along for an adventure!
I love this photobook page by Marilyn using them:
And I used another set, Messy Pockets: Photobooth for our travels to Argentina many years later. For these pages I decided to make use of the amazing street art and vibrant colours of Buenos Aires, including the balloon faces which proved to be sadly apt as it turned out .. ah well. Life gives you lemons .. and yellow frown balloons too I guess. And the youngest daughter had an amazing time.
Difficult as some of the emotions are around these memories, I still love that we had these adventures AND I loved the process of making the photobooks - and of course I love knowing that they are there on the shelves for her to look back on.
