THINGS WITH WINGS
I think there are a few reasons why butterflies and birds are such commonly occurring motifs in mixed media creating and scrapbooking.
For one thing, they are perfect for scattering on a page and filling a spot! But as living things, they somehow embody a lot more energy and suggestion of movement and life than static elements like leaves and flowers.
(And as someone said about my ‘power of faces’ post, even a bug or a butterfly serves that role on a page and they always NEED something with a face of some sort!)
And, of course, there are already strong symbolic connotations, especially around butterflies and concepts of transformation, rebirth and lightness and joy.
Here’s a fabulous one with scattered butterflies from my design partner Rachel using “Hear My Voice: Growing” of moments outside on their permitted walks during those strangest of times in the Covid lockdowns:
Birds as well can symbolise freedom and escape - although to me they suggest curiosity as well.
Not surprisingly there are plenty of birds in my “The Birds Will Sing” collection:
I even use them to create repeating patterns, such as this ‘paper’ from the emotions kit:
Do you like using birds and butterflies on your creations? Or maybe you are one of those people who find butterflies and moths too bug-like? ;-)
All the creations above except Rachel’s were made with collections that are in the new batch of surprise ‘Holiday Treats’ at the Lilypad :-)
Instead of the usual mid-weekly sale, there will be lots of recent products HALF PRICE all through December.
Next Friday we will swap them out for a new final batch of designs.

Love this. From days long ago I have used birds as either captured and needing freedom and symbolizing freedom. I think that's why I am always attracted to media that has birds. I always need new birds!!!
I like birds, butterflies, moths, bats, bugs, all of the interesting critters. Oddly, I find faces (other than the photos I'm featuring) distracting on LOs. I also didn't like them in fabrics when I quilted, either. Maybe my "facial attraction" is low-functioning! LOL! I actually have a strong memory for faces - probably that's why I find them distracting. I like adding journaling bits to convey "behind the scenes" commentary on my LOs rather than anthropomorphic imagery.
